2010 Chrysler Town & Country
Chrysler Town & Country is a seven-passenger minivan in a segment that it created. A traditional two-box shape, it has evolved from a vehicle with a back hatch and one sliding door to one with swivel and stowing seats that disappear into built-in floor storage areas as well as the addition of a left side sliding door. Add that, a table for the kids, and an overhead DVD player, and you have the makings of a serious cross-country hauler.
The Town & Country Touring is available standard with the 3.8-liter V6 that is seen throughout the rest of the Dodge and Chrysler lineup. Our test vehicle was equipped with the optional 4.0-liter V6 with six-speed automatic transmission, which at least sounds like it’s lighting the tires. Producing 251-horsepower and 259 lb-ft. of torque, it was quite stout for a minivan, especially one weighing in at a touch over 4,500 pounds. EPA estimates for fuel economy call for 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The transverse mounted engine is situated between twin-MacPherson struts with gas-charged shocks with a stabilizer bar in an isolated suspension cradle.
The rear end of the T&C features a version of a twist beam suspension with coil springs, a track bar, stabilizer bar and gas-charged shocks. Order the towing package and you’ll get a set of self-leveling shock absorbers to keep the deck flat. There’s nothing sophisticated here, but there’s something to be said about “tried and true” when it comes to a family hauler.
