The 2012 Jeep Compass should see no major changes after its substantial freshening for the 2011 model year. For 2011, the Compass gets freshened styling, a revised interior, new suspension tuning, and greater off-road capability. This compact SUV shares its basic design with the Jeep Patriot and Dodge Caliber. Compass seats 5 and comes in Base and Limited trims. Each is available with front-wheel drive or one of two all-wheel-drive systems. The standard Freedom Drive I automatically shifts power to wheels that need traction and includes a switch to lock in a 50/50 front/rear power split. The optional Freedom Drive II includes a raised suspension, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Standard on the front-drive Base is a 158-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Optional on that model and standard on the AWD Base and all Limiteds is a 172-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the Base. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) that behaves much like an automatic is optional on the Base and standard on the Limited. Safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. A Latitude Package for CVT-equipped Base models includes heated front seats, a fold-flat front-passenger seat, and remote engine start. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and automatic climate control are standard on the Limited. A sunroof and hard drive for storing digital-music files are optional across the board. Limited versions are available with a navigation system
