2010 Lincoln MKT
Lincoln’s New MKT crossover isn’t an easy vehicle to warm up to, as it’s brutish and not particularly beautiful. The best parts of the MKT reside within the cabin and under the sheet metal itself.
Only two MKT trim levels are available,‘EcoBoost’ version. It uses a new 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 Ford claims produces nearly identical fuel economy numbers to that of the naturally-aspirated 3.7 V6 in the other MKT model.

What’s really noteworthy is how much more powerful the EcoBoost engine is - 355-horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque compared to the 3.7’s 268 and 267, respectively. That’s well above V6-equipped competitors and just what the MKT needs to really get moving, as it has a curb weight that’s just a smidge over two and a half tons. And the EcoBoost engine does work well in tandem with the six-speed automatic transmission. It provides plenty of passing prowess when the need arises but otherwise quietly lurks under the hood, only showing its potential when a driver’s right foot implores it to.Still, as fun as having a twin-turbocharged vehicle is, the MKT is by no means meant for taking on a track. One glance at the stretched out exterior and it’s instantly ap
parent that big families will benefit most from what this vehicle has to offer.
The MKT is an adept people-mover, holding seven people in three rows and featuring all sorts of safety systems to keep everyone inside protected from the dangers of the roads. What’s sort of odd is that a six-seat configuration is optional - so in essence you’ll be paying more money for fewer passenger places. Second row occupants, though, get their own bucket seats that feature heating and cooling as well as lumbar support. The seats also fold and tumble to make a flat load surface when folded in tandem with the 60/40 split rear bench.
Getting into and out of the MKT is easy for those inhabiting the two front rows, while hopping into and out of the third row isn’t the chore it can be in other vehicles. This despite the MKT’s low-slung profile - which at first we worry will cause many bumped heads (it doesn’t).
Folding the rearmost seats is done simply through a few tugs on attached straps. It’s a little confusing figuring out which one mechanically controls what operation, but we’re sure an owner will have it down pat within a month (we only get a week).
Being a crossover of the luxury variety means there are plenty of interior features to keep those inside happy, though many are optional and cost a pretty penny. Besides what has already been mentioned, there is an available refrigerated console, DVD headrests, panoramic sunroof and premium sound system. We like Ford’s customizable ambient lighting, but that’s old hat now.
Lincoln didn’t skimp on safety though, putting together a long list of standard features to protect passengers. Many people will instantly feel that much safer being inside this giant, but it’s reassuring to know it comes with all sorts of active and passive features like six airbags, traction control, ABS brakes, fog lights and high-intensity discharge headlamps. If you haven’t used up all your cash on a surround sound system or huge sunroof, optional safety features include a blind spot alert system and adaptive headlamps.
The MKT is a very specific vehicle for a very specific type of person. It provides three rows of comfort for families and though we may not have little ones of our own, we can appreciate the convenience and luxury it can provide for those who do.
