The true beauty of the M5 is its ability to be whatever the driver wants it to be: a cushy family ride, a sport sedan or a track demon. With the steering and suspension in Comfort mode, the engine set to Efficient and the gearbox in its laid-back position, the M5 drives just like the regular 5 Series, albeit with a little more kick. It is comfortable and loaded to the nines with luxury; every conceivable item is in place up to and including a navigation system and superb sound system. The latest M5 is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. To say it produces prodigious power is an understatement. With the intercooled turbos blowing their not-so-little vanes out, it produces 560 horsepower. Now, that is a big number. The torque, however, is really what grabs the driver’s attention — all 500 pound-feet at just 1,500 rpm. This means that, from basically idle to redline, this engine is ready to give the riders a mighty boot in the pants whenever the throttle is prodded with purpose. It also equates to a very fast zero-to-100-kilometres-an-hour run of 4.3 seconds and a blindingly fast 80-to-120-km/h passing time of three seconds flat.
Switch the mode to Sport and you have a very capable performer, as everything is amped up to emphasize performance — there is better weight in the steering, the damping is firmer and the response from the engine and transmission is much quicker. And, finally, for those hyper days, there’s the Sport+ mode. It amplifies everything yet again — firmer steering and suspension while the engine and transmission go into attack mode. The driver can also engage the M Dynamic Mode. This setting dials back the electronic stability control system to the point where the back end will go walkabout with little provocation. For the truly adventurous, the stability control system can be turned off fully — not a wise move unless donuts are the order of the day. The beauty is the Sport/Sport+ modes can be stored in the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel. Now, switching personalities is as simple as pushing a button.
Regardless of the setup chosen, the M5 delivers astounding road manners. It is comfortable and accommodating in the Comfort/ Efficient mode, yet there is very little body roll and the steering has a pleasantly tight feel to it. Opt for the firmer settings and the damping and steering become much crisper without completely killing ride comfort. It comes together such that keeping the M5 on the driver’s intended line is remarkably easy in spite of the cornering forces it generates when pushed to the limit. More remarkable is that it does not feel its size. It is a large sedan that weighs 1,990 kilograms — the driver would never know this from the feedback and precision of the drive.
BMW is an acronym for Bayerische Motoren Werke AG -- or, in English, Bavarian Motor Works. Whatever you call it, the German-based company is one of the world's most respected automakers, renowned for crafting luxury cars and SUVs that offer superior levels of driving enjoyment. BMW's famous advertising slogan describes each of its vehicles as The ultimate driving machine, and it's not mere hyperbole. Over the past couple of decades, BMWs have become the standard for performance and luxury in most of the over $30,000 segments. With family-friendly wagons, crisp sedans, distinctive coupes, nimble sports cars and spacious SUVs offered, BMW's model roster is diverse. But its vehicles all share a common characteristic: the ability to make drivers feel gloriously connected to the road.
