The Rogue's CVT has a saving grace -- steering wheelmounted paddle shifters (yet another piece of the Premium package), which allow the driver to paddle through six pre-determined ratios. The reason it makes such a difference is that the slight drop in revs accompanying each upshift alters the engine's tone, which breaks up the cacophony. This makes hard acceleration a far more palatable venture. Sometimes, it is the simplest things that make the bigger difference.
