Whether I was on the road heading to work, or cruising along at highway speeds, the Rogue’s front independent strut and rear multi-link independent suspension made for a nice ride. Mechanically, the Rogue's 2.5-litre four-cylinder is a smooth operator that churns out 170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, enough to get the crossover to 100 kilo-metres an hour in 8.7 seconds, which is respectable. Power is relayed to the road through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). I despise these things. Mat the gas and one thing happens -- the engine is pushed to redline and there it stays until the driver eventually backs off. The Rogue's CVT has a saving grace -- steering wheelmounted paddle shifters (yet another piece of the Premium package), which allow the driver to paddle through six pre-determined ratios. The reason it makes such a difference is that the slight drop in revs accompanying each upshift alters the engine's tone, which breaks up the cacophony. This makes hard acceleration a far more palatable venture. Sometimes, it is the simplest things that make the bigger difference.
